The Diocese of Sheffield is committed to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce which represents all aspects of the communities we are part of and welcomes all applications.  We are working toward being more diverse in age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability and ethnicity so that we can better reflect the communities we serve.  More importantly, creating an environment where everyone, from any background, can do their best work is the right thing to do.

The Diocese of Sheffield is the Church of England to nearly 1.2 million people across South Yorkshire and adjoining areas. We are a diocese of contrasts in terms of relative wealth and poverty and with many areas of both urban and rural deprivation. Led by our Bishop, Rt Rev Dr Pete Wilcox, and Chief Executive, Katie Bell, we are in the midst of an ambitious five-year strategic plan supported by a transformation programme with £4.9m extra funding for pioneering growth in this diverse part of the Church of England. In 2023 we have started a Strategy Refresh process which will see us review the progress of our current strategy and refresh our plans to 2030. This role will be a critical voice into this process.

As our Finance Director, you will have a critical role in the strategic leadership and financial sustainability of the diocese. Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will lead the diocesan finance team to ensure that robust reporting and monitoring is in place to the highest standard to fulfil all regulatory requirements, as well as taking lead responsibility for preparing our annual budget and the financial forecasting that informs the five-year strategic plan. As a key member of the senior leadership team of the Diocese, you will also play a critical role in broader strategic decision making, as a role model for our values, and in supporting and advising our Chief Executive in leading the Diocesan Board of Finance.

You will be an experienced financial leader and qualified member of a recognised accountancy professional body, able to blend technical skills with a track record of effective strategic leadership. You will have the credibility to engage with board level stakeholders. You will work in sympathy with the mission and values of the Church of England and have the ability to learn, where needed, the structures, procedures and drivers that govern life across the church. If you feel you bring the energy, passion and technical skill to play a part in making a real difference to the diverse communities we serve, we would love to hear from you.
