Southwark Cathedral

Chief Financial Officer

Salary: £70,000

Location: Southwark Cathedral

Southwark Cathedral is excited and committed to the next stage in its life and mission. It has a good, strong legacy on which to build, and many opportunities to pursue. Since the recent arrival of a new Dean, the Chapter has begun to refresh its vision and priorities for the next five years, shaping a strategy that is both achievable and sustainable, building on our 1400 years as a worshipping community and as a place of inclusion, community and welcome.

The Cathedral stands on the vibrant and exciting regenerated South Bank of the Thames, surrounded by cultural venues such as Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and Borough Market, the offices of major companies, schools, and diverse residential communities. The Cathedral is also a community of open-minded and forward-looking people who seek to work in partnership for the common good and be a place of welcome, hospitality, and friendship.

The Cathedral confidently describes itself as ‘an inclusive Christian community, growing in orthodox faith and radical love’. It is the ‘mother church’ of the large diocese of Southwark, working to support and promote the ministry of the Bishop, and the many parishes and chaplaincies he oversees. It also hosts a large number of educational, musical, and artistic events, as part of its visitor engagement programme. The Cathedral’s vocation to nurture a congregation, resource a diocese, and make space for community and partnerships, is its primary energy and purpose. Our annual income, drawn from a range of sources, sits at around £2m and we are run by a committed staff team of c.25 and a large pool of volunteers.

As our Chief Financial Officer, you will have a critical role in the financial management of the cathedral from both an operational and strategic perspective. Reporting to the Dean, Mark Oakley, you will lead the cathedral finance team to ensure that the service, processes, policies and systems align to provide the Cathedral’s Chapter and committees with the assurance and insight required to support thriving mission, ministry and operations. Robust accounting, clear reporting and strong financial forecasting all form key tenets of this ambition, as does regular open interaction with our trustees and other senior leaders. As a key member of the senior leadership team of the Cathedral, you will also play a critical role in broader leadership as a role model for our values, and in supporting and advising our Dean and other senior leaders.

You will be an experienced financial leader and qualified member of a recognised accountancy professional body, able to blend technical skills with a track record of effective strategic and people leadership. You will be comfortable and capable of producing accurate and timely accounts and forecasts that support effective strategic decision making. You will have strong relational and communication skills that enable you to clearly explain key issues to stakeholders at all levels, including those with no financial training. While you do not need to have worked within the Church of England previously, you will need, with our help, to quickly learn its structures, culture and dynamics. Above all, you must be able to demonstrate an empathy with the values, ministry and mission of the Cathedral and have a passion for its contribution to the life of the London and surrounding areas.

We want our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion for all to be reflected in the composition of our staff. We are particularly keen to receive applications from candidates from communities currently underrepresented at senior levels in the cathedral.
