Great British Nuclear (GBN) is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero tasked with delivering the government’s long-term nuclear programme and supporting the government’s ambition to deliver up to 24GW of nuclear power in the UK by 2050.

To deliver this ambitious programme of works, GBN is building a team of experienced professionals and is currently seeking to appoint the organisation’s first Legal Director.

The legal context of GBN will expand and evolve in response to the unique challenges of the nuclear industry. In the short to medium term, the focus of the Legal Function will be to provide legal support for the selection and procurement of technology, alongside advising on and supporting activities to identify and secure sites for new nuclear builds.

The Legal Director will operate as GBN’s intelligent client, advising the CEO, Board and Executive Team on all legal matters, as well as anticipating and ensuring that legal risks and commercial legal opportunities are considered and within the powers and authority of GBN.  They will also represent GBN as an intelligent customer of external legal support, securing the right resources to ensure specified legal outcomes are delivered on time, within budget and at the required quality.

GBN are interested in hearing from candidates with excellent technical and practical knowledge of legal services, with extensive demonstrable experience in negotiating, reviewing and drafting substantial and complex commercial contracts and handling a broad range of issues.

Given the senior nature of the role, it is also essential for the role holder to have the ability to engage effectively in high-level interactions and provide the right level of constructive challenge, advice and fresh thinking.

This is an exciting and challenging role which represents a unique opportunity to help deliver a critical national mandate, for the benefit of generations to come.
