This is an exciting time to join Cycling UK as our ambitious charity embarks on its far-reaching strategy and builds on recent growth and successes.

For 146 years we have advocated for the rights of people who cycle, improving infrastructure, and inspiring people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to embrace the joys of cycling.

Cycling UK promotes active travel through its ground-breaking behaviour change programmes, providing guidance on cycling-related issues, fostering a vibrant community of cyclists, and championing the many benefits of cycling for recreation, well-being, and the environment. Our activities reflect the commitment of our network of volunteers, campaigners, partners, and around 70,000 members, to make cycling mainstream and to create a lasting difference to the lives of individuals and communities.

Our work is not just for those who already cycle, but for future riders too.

We aim to create a society where everyone sees the well-being, health, and environmental benefits of cycling, even if they don’t cycle themselves. We believe that the only way to build long-term political support for cycling is to produce positive public support for cycling

That’s why our 10-year aim is to reach the typical cycling enthusiast and also engage those who might rarely – or never – cycle themselves but are keen to tackle climate change or address the physical and mental health challenges we face as a society, and as individuals.

To achieve this ambitious, long-term aim of shifting the dial on public perceptions of cycling, we must first strengthen our foundations as a charity. This will be our focus for the next five years – while sowing the seeds for engaging with more diverse people and communities.

Our new Chair has a pivotal  leadership role to play in the success of Cycling UK – one which is difficult to capture in a simple list of duties. The way they carry out their duties will have a significant impact on the charity’s effectiveness. Therefore we are seeking someone with excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to guide the board in collaborative decision-making, who will make clear decisions, and communicate these effectively.

This is the first time the charity has looked beyond its membership and run an open recruitment for its Chair. This reflects the trustees' recognition of the charity's increased scope and ambition and the need for our future Chair to lead the board to enable us to capitalise on this. It also comes on the heels of securing member support for significant and positive governance changes. These changes open up recruitment to future trustee positions, enabling a greater diversity of people and skills to be involved in the leadership of our charity.

You will bring trustee and executive leadership experience and be highly skilled at chairing meetings and facilitation.

Cycling UK is committed to embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
