The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG Kew) is seeking an exceptional leader for the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO) to spearhead the transformation of their IT and digital services. As a global leader in plant and fungal research, RBG Kew is at the forefront of efforts to stop biodiversity loss and tackle some of the most critical environmental challenges. Unique in its space as a research organisation as well as a visitor attraction, RBG Kew has a multitude of facets for which the new CIO will need to understand to ensure effective delivery of services.

About the Role:

As CIO, you will lead the IT Directorate at RBG Kew, providing strategic leadership and ensuring the effective use of innovative technology to support RBG Kew’s mission. A central focus of the role will be on strengthening the IT infrastructure and services that support Kew Science, particularly in the areas of data management, AI, and emerging technologies. You will work closely with Kew's scientific teams, empowering them to conduct world-class research by leveraging advanced digital solutions and enabling the exploitation of vast scientific datasets.

The role encompasses both the delivery of Kew’s IT strategy and acting as a key player on the Executive Board, where you will help drive the organisation's broader goals as outlined in the Manifesto for Change 2021-2030. As the Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO), you will also oversee information management frameworks, data security, and the responsible use of innovative technologies such as AI to support research excellence at Kew.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of Kew’s IT strategy, with a focus on advancing Kew Science’s digital transformation.
  • Champion the integration of new technologies (AI, data analytics, etc.) across scientific and operational functions.
  • Oversee the management of Kew’s vast scientific data, ensuring it aligns with the organisation’s mission and enhances global research efforts.
  • Collaborate with Kew Science to deliver cutting-edge technology solutions that support biodiversity and climate change research.
  • Lead the IT team, ensuring excellent service delivery, infrastructure resilience, and security measures are in place.
  • Act as SIRO, managing data risks and ensuring compliance with relevant information laws.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Proven experience in leading IT functions within complex, research-focused organisations, preferably in a science or research setting is desirable but not essential.
  • A visionary leader with the ability to translate technology trends into meaningful innovations that support scientific research.
  • Strong experience in data management, especially managing large scientific datasets.
  • A strategic thinker with experience of working collaboratively at Executive Board level.
  • Expertise in managing IT security, governance, and risk frameworks.
