“Everything we do is to improve the lives of the people and communities we serve, and to promote mental health and wellbeing for all.”

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust operates across more than 90 sites in South London, providing not only core mental health services to our four local boroughs (Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Croydon), but we also offer 50 specialist mental health services nationwide. Part of the South London Mental Health and Community Partnership, we also work closely in partnership with a variety of organisations across London, within both the South East London and South West London Integrated Care Systems, as part of King’s Health Partners, and with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at Kings College London. Rated as “Good” by the CQC, the Trust has over 4,800 staff working at the cutting edge of mental health delivery.

Our ambitious five-year strategy Aiming High; Changing Lives sets out our vision to offer each and every person outstanding treatment and support to enable their recovery and to help them live a fulfilling life. We are beginning to see greater investment in mental health to correct years of underfunding, in tandem with a positive shift in societal attitudes to mental health, which will strengthen our work to speak up against stigma. This backdrop presents a hugely exciting opportunity for us, those we care for, and our local communities and partners. Together, we believe we can be outstanding.

We will build on the commitments set out in the NHS Long Term Plan and on our existing work pioneering new models of care to take our ambitions one step further such as the development of the Lambeth Alliance and One Croydon Alliance and through Provider Collaboratives as part of the South London Partnership.

The Trust is now looking to appoint our next Chair to provide and support the leadership to help us achieve better outcomes, prevention, and also a better quality of care for all our service users. Continually improving quality in a financially challenged local health and care system is no easy task, but this position offers the opportunity to play a pivotal role in the largest mental health provider in the country, working with an excellent leadership team, a committed board, and our Council of Governors, as we continue on our transformational journey.

This role will require and experienced Chair from a similarly large and complex environment, with a strong professional and/or personal interest in mental health, and passion for quality, and excellence in this area. With very strong communication and interpersonal skills, you will be experienced in building and developing relationships and partnerships with a variety of stakeholders as well as understanding how best to navigate a complex network of competing interests to get the best outcomes for service users and our workforce.

No organisation can provide quality care without equality. We want our South London and Maudsley to be the best mental health trust in the country – known not only for the excellent services we deliver to people, recognising differential needs and access, but also for how staff support and value each other as equals. As a Trust, we want to be known for our action on anti-racism and this will be a golden thread throughout all our work. We are committed to tackling discrimination and embracing diversity across throughout all of our directorates. We would particularly welcome applications from people who have a protected characteristic. Lived experience of mental ill health is also valued by the Trust across our workforce, and Board.

If you believe you share our values and vision, and have the experience, skills and knowledge required, then we would be delighted to hear from you.
