The General Dental Council (GDC) regulates over 123,000 dental professionals, including over 45,000 dentists and 78,000 dental care professionals, who overwhelmingly provide excellent dental services across our four nations and share our commitment to putting the public’s interests first. Dental professionals play a vital role in the wider healthcare system, seeing millions of patients every year to support good oral and dental health.

We have a crucial role in ensuring that the public are protected, that they have confidence in dental professionals, and that professional standards are maintained. We will always have public safety and confidence at the heart of what we do; but we are moving from a focus on enforcement when things go wrong, to an approach that emphasises learning within the system, resolving concerns locally wherever possible, and engaging more effectively with the dental professions.

This role will bring considerable challenge, opportunity and reward and you will be joining the GDC at an important and exciting time as the organisation and the regulatory environment in which we operate undergoes ongoing transformational change. Whilst our role in public protection remains unchanged, the future plans we are developing recognise that we must continue to modernise and improve our performance. All of this is underpinned by our values of Fairness, Transparency, Responsiveness and Respect and through our resolute commitment to fostering equality, diversity and inclusion.

Reporting to the CEO and as key member of our Executive Leadership Team (ELT), this is a significant and influential senior leadership position. Our Executive Director, Legal and Governance will be responsible for leading a diverse and multi-disciplinary team of c.85, covering Legal Presentation, Governance, Legal Advisory, Information Governance and Executive Assistant to the ELT.

The postholder will be a qualified solicitor, barrister or legal executive, with a deep track record of providing proactive, expert, timely and authoritative legal advice and governance support to senior leaders and key decision-makers at the highest levels.  You will bring experience of leading and developing high-performing, large-scale, customer-focused teams, gained within a regulator or regulated environment. With the ability to contribute strategically as a member of the ELT, candidates will be politically astute, with outstanding relationship-building and communication skills and the personal presence and gravitas to gain the confidence of our many and varied stakeholders across the four countries of the UK. With experience of leading and embedding sustainable change and improvement, candidates will demonstrate the strategic vision, personal credibility and determination to get things done. Strong personal values, which align with those of the GDC and an unwavering commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion will underpin the skills and attributes needed for this role.

The GDC operates hybrid working and this role will require a presence in the London office 3 days per week with occasional travel to Birmingham
