The General Dental Council (GDC) regulates over 123,000 dental professionals, including over 45,000 dentists and 78,000 dental care professionals, who overwhelmingly provide excellent dental services across our four nations and share our commitment to putting the public’s interests first. Dental professionals play a vital role in the wider healthcare system, seeing millions of patients every year to support good oral and dental health.

We have a crucial role in ensuring that the public are protected, that they have confidence in dental professionals, and that professional standards are maintained. We will always have public safety and confidence at the heart of what we do; but we are moving from a focus on enforcement when things go wrong, to an approach that emphasises learning within the system, resolving concerns locally wherever possible, and engaging more effectively with the dental professions.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Legal and Governance, this role will bring considerable challenge, opportunity and reward and you will be joining the GDC at an important and exciting time as the organisation and the regulatory environment in which we operate undergoes ongoing transformational change. Whilst our role in public protection remains unchanged, the future plans we are developing recognise that we must continue to modernise and improve our performance. All of this is underpinned by our values of Fairness, Transparency, Responsiveness and Respect and through our resolute commitment to fostering equality, diversity and inclusion.

For this role, we are looking for an experienced qualified solicitor, barrister or legal executive, with a demonstrable track record of providing proactive, expert, timely and authoritative legal advice in administrative and regulatory law and current legal issues relevant to the GDC. (human rights, freedom of information, data protection, corporate governance, judicial review, administrative law, European law and complex litigation, including judicial reviews).

You will bring experience of leading and developing high-performing teams of lawyers, delivering high-quality, timely civil or regulatory casework gained in house in a public-sector organisation or in practice, working with public sector clients. As a member of the GDC Senior Leadership Team, you will have the ability to contribute to the strategic and corporate management of the organisation as a subject matter specialist for Legal Services, advising the GDC’s Executive Management Team.

Candidates will have outstanding relationship-building and communication skills and the personal presence and gravitas to gain the confidence and develop strong working relationships at all levels of the GDC and with external stakeholders including the Professional Standards Authority and external legal advisers. Strong personal values, which align with those of the GDC and an unwavering commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion will underpin the skills and attributes needed for this role.

The GDC operates hybrid working and this role will require a presence in the London office 2 days per week.
