We’re one of the largest housing providers in the UK with 80,000 homes, almost half of which are in London, with the remainder in the South East, the Isle of Wight and the Midlands, providing over 167,000 people with somewhere to call their own.

At Southern Housing, we understand the difference that safe, secure and affordable homes can make to people’s lives.  We offer traditional social housing, shared ownership, affordable rent, private market rent, student accommodation, care and support or outright sales. Our vision is to create communities where everyone has a safe home in a place where they’re proud to live.

Our organisation, and the sector as a whole, has faced continued challenges with increased costs and increasing expectations of housing associations, as expressed by new consumer regulation. Given our constrained financial capacity and our focus on what matters most to residents, the board has set three ambitious goals for the next four years to ensure we are well placed to meet these challenges.

  • We aim to be the best large landlord for repairs and maintenance by 2027
  • We will strive to ensure we achieve a C1 Consumer grading by our next regulatory inspection and,
  • We will improve our financial strength by driving more than £33 million of efficiencies out of our cost base by 2029

Our current Chair is due to step down from the board. It is an exciting time for Southern Housing and a great opportunity for our new Chair to spearhead our plans and lead us to deliver great outcomes. With our three goals clearly established, we are consulting with colleagues and residents on how to achieve the outcomes which will shape our strategic plan 2026-30.  We have a strong board and a skilled executive team, and our new Chair will lead and inspire them to ensure our success. We want an individual who will embrace our HEART values and ensure we remain collaborative and inclusive as an organisation.

We are looking for an individual who has a background which has been steeped in a highly regulated environment, either in an executive or non-executive capacity. With experience at Committee Chair level at a minimum, you will have a healthy appreciation for good governance and will bring skills in managing discussion and getting the best out of individuals. You will be an individual who as a passion for customer services and true customer engagement. To be successful in this role we need an outcome focused leader who supports, engages and challenges constructively.
